Next time you drive past 40th and Farnam streets, make sure to look for their vintage red and white neon sign. Founded and owned by Drew Davies, Oxide Design Co. opened its doors in October of 2001 and has been blazing a design trail ever since.

With designers Adam Torpin and Joe Sparano rounding out the team, Oxide Design Co. specializes in corporate identity, brand strategy, packaging, print and Web design. They may be small, but the Oxide team isn't one to put themselves into a single design silo - they happen to enjoy any challenge a client may throw their way, even if it isn't their specialty.

One project they are particularly proud of is building the Film Streams brand from the ground up. They have also recently launched new brand identities for the River City Rodeo, the inaugural Owl Ride cycling event and are very proud of their work on the Big Omaha conference, just a few short months ago.

Oxide Design Co. was first located just a single block west of their current location. "The neighborhood has been really good to us, so even though we had outgrown our first office, we didn't have to go far to upgrade," says designer Joe Sparano.

And the neon sign? The office was a hardware store for quite some time and when Davies moved in, they jumped at the chance to refurbish the existing (non-functional) sign with some new neon and a new coat of paint. The structure of the sign is entirely from the original.

Opening this September at Midtown Crossing at Turner Park, Callahan Financial Planning Company is an independent, Omaha-based company, making it the first firm of its kind in that community.

Their difference is significant, but simple, says William Callahan, president of Callahan Financial, "We are a fee-only financial planning firm, which means we do not earn commissions or revenue from anyone but our clients -- this is what we mean by 'conflict-free planning.'"

Callahan chose Midtown Crossing based on its proximity to what they see as the "driving workforce" of Omaha. "We saw the five Fortune 500 companies, the universities, medical centers and dozens of other mid-sized employers in the area surrounding the development and know that was the location that best fit our service," said Callahan.

Something Callahan and his team are particularly excited about are the personal finance classes they will be hosting. Most classes will be free and held over the lunch hour. Other classes will be held during the late afternoon and on Saturdays after the outdoor market wraps up.

For those interested in classes or for grand opening activities, keep an eye on www.callahanfp.com for an up-to-date schedule.

Fifteen years ago, Ashley Lynn's was just a quaint barber and beauty salon located on Lincoln Road in Bellevue, Neb. Back then, tanning was just a small portion of the business. Today, there are 11 locations in Omaha and another eight salons sprinkled through out the Midwest and Southeast.

Ashley Lynn's 42nd and Dodge streets location opened its doors in May 2001 and now boasts UV tanning services and spray tanning and a full service beauty salon. Just recently, Ashley Lynn's added massage therapy services at two of their Omaha locations - 78th and Cass streets and 144th and Center streets.

Stop by Ashley Lynn's and take advantage of their promotions for August; $2 tans (entry-level tans), three spray tans for $39 and tan for free until September with the purchase of a membership.
