2009 Mayor’s Neighborhood Grants Now Available to Neighborhood Associations
In an effort to improve Omaha neighborhoods and work toward preventing crime, Mayor Mike Fahey is offering registered neighborhood associations an opportunity to apply for a portion of an $80,000 grant. The funds are part of the 2009 Mayor's Neighborhood Grants Program.
The deadline to apply is March 20..
Since 2002, more than 140 grants and more than $500,000 have been awarded to neighborhood groups.
"I am proud to say that our neighborhoods are more active, engaged and empowered than ever before. Our community cannot grow and improve without the support of our neighborhoods. These grants empower neighborhood associations to make improvements where neighbors determine they are needed the most," Mayor Fahey said.
Neighborhood Improvement Grants pay for the development of green spaces with benches and trees, landscaping of public areas or park development, and other innovative neighborhood programming. Neighborhood Crime Prevention Grants offer the resources for radios or uniforms for Omaha Coalition of Citizen Patrols or environmental design changes to help prevent crime.
Before a grant is authorized, the appropriate Neighborhood Association must approve the project, with all necessary city permits obtained in advance. Neighborhood Associations must also have completed all evaluations for past Neighborhood Grants before being eligible for this year's grants.
Applicants can match the $5,000 grant with volunteer hours and each volunteer hour equals $18. Neighborhood Associations can use any combination of dollars or volunteer hours to meet the required matching amount.
Grant applications are available at the City of Omaha Mayor's Office Web site. For more details, call Barb Farho in Mayor Fahey's office at (402) 444-6881. Grants will be announced during the week of April 20.
