Midtown Move Positive for YES
A change of address will help meet the changing needs of a guardian agency, a local nonprofit serving homeless and at-risk youth in Greater Omaha. Youth Emergency Services (YES) recently moved its administrative office from 3910 Harney St. to another Midtown location, 2679 Farnam St. Stacy Seier, YES's marketing and volunteer coordinator, said the office is more visible at its new address and more accessible -- both for visitors with disabilities and for YES staff.
"This administrative office is in the middle of all our other facilities -- our shelter, our drop-in center, our new maternity group home and our new transitional living facility -- so our staff can easily access the building. We're also in an easy location for people to drop off donations," said Seier.
The new office, she added, is better configured for its sole administrative role. At one point, the former space also housed YES's drop-in center, a place where youth in crisis could go for a meal, a shower and/or counseling.
"The configuration of that office met those needs. But, once we opened the drop-in center at 20th and Harney streets, the configuration wasn't what it needed to be for an office space," said Seier.
The new facility includes six individual offices, a board room, reception area, storage room, break room and donation area, quite a transformation for what, in a former life, was a car showroom.
"When we first saw the space, it was a large open room with two columns. We put together a floor plan and the landlord built the office for us," said Seier.
YES moved into its new office in early August, complementing a couple of other big changes for the nonprofit this year. It recently expanded its list of services to include the previously mentioned maternity group home and transitional living program.
"It's very exciting," said Seier. "We have a lot going on."
The added activity has triggered the need for some extra help. Seier said YES is now working to setup a volunteer receptionist program.
YES began serving homeless and at-risk youth in Omaha in 1974. It is funded through donations and federal and state grants.
